I'm a new ostomy patient. I'm told the amount of gas coming out will decrease somewhat but not go away altogether. Aside from avoiding foods that make gas and taking simethacone, is there anything else I can do to reduce gas?
What does one do if a loud burst of gas comes out while attending, or giving, a lecture? Is there a certain way to handle this or a certain thing to say? This must be a common problem, right?

If I feel the gas coming I will put my hand over my stoma and apply some pressure to muffle the sound. I will also look around like everyone else does to see who did it (the good thing is nobody smells mine until I let the air out). I have also said "excuse me my belly is making noise I must be hungry" as most people do not expect gas to come out the front.
