Experiment

Post by Jimbob »

Good Morning All;

I always wondered about Transit time so I conducted an experiment.

I had a colonoscopy last Thursday 22 Sept at 0730 in the morning so I fasted the day before and did the cleanout procedures so I know I was empty at least by the evening of the 21st. Lets call it 2100, 9PM for you civilians.

My experiment was to see how long I could go without any stool expelling. I made it until this morning and still have not passed stool but was getting a bit uncomfortable so I am irrigating while I am typing this. By my reckoning that is about 106 hours or four and a half days.

Just interesting information to know for going on trips etc.

By the way, the Colonoscopy turned out fine. Not even one polyp.

Everyone have a good day.

Hey Jimbob,

That is interesting. I recently travelled to Australia which took 3 flights, one of which was 14hrs. 36 hours in total from door to door. Well spending all that time waiting around in airports and in the air I had to eat. Although I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have had those two pints in Vancouver. Anyway, I didn't make it. Halfway through the 14 hr flight, and roughly 24hrs of travel time, I felt the oh too familiar "rumble in the Bronx", and spent the next 6 hours or so chewing down Imodium and running back and forth to the lavy. The only saving grace was that I had the isle seat and we were sitting in the second to last row right beside to the washroom.

Had I thought to do a fast and purge like we have to for a colonoscopy I probably would have been fine. I'd much rather spend an uncomfortable day at home prior to travelling, than go through what I did. Next time I have long travel plans that's what I'll do.

Great information. Thanks for sharing that.

Congrats on your clear results.

Hi JimBob,

Also interesting to me. While you have always had enviable transit times, that seems a bit excessive and not necessarily a good thing.
When you mention “uncomfortable” was that physically painful or just the full feeling when you know you are going to start producing and do not want to deal with the bag BS? Or was it like you were not going to produce and the system was plugged as in blockage?

The reason I ask is because I am having to continually having to increase the amount if infusion to get the same results. There are times I expect I pass 6000 cc though in 5 infusion in order to get a full 48 hours.

I have several times contemplating stopping irrigation for a while to see if I can reverse that trend. Each time I get close to the point of “fullness” I wimp out and flush it all. What a great feeling.

While I have known since the beginning I was psychologically addicted to irrigation (I hate that f…ing bag); the real question is if there becomes an actual physical dependence of the digestive system for proper elimination on irrigation? That notion we poo-pooed  in the gator article but I have wondered over the years if we discounted it too vehemently. We doth protest too much.

I would welcome long time irrigator input to this question.

Congrats on the clean scope, had my 10 years a couple of months ago and they zapped 2.

I'm not sure even that would help my speedy digestion. I irrigate at night, and often see that day's lunch. Lettuce, especially.

I might get 36 hours, but often don't even get 24. I had a colonoscopy in May, and did a little longer, but not even 2 days.

The last 2 nights, I've been trying to get cleaned out enough to prevent lates and earlies. Sunday, I spent 1-1/2 hours doing a total of 4 infusions before output ran clear. Last night, I spent 2 hours, 4 infusions; it never did run clear, and I had a late return as I was putting on the stoma cap.

If it's running through so fast, shouldn't I be losing weight? Life is so not fair!

My experience coincides with your experiment. I have been using Milk of Magnesia once a week to induce diarrhea (see my post: Arternative to Irrigation) and usually I am 4 1/2 day output free. With low fiber diet and some iron supplements can go a week without output till the next cleansing. I'm happy as a clown!
All the best!

Low fiber diets and prolonged transit times certainly are working for you, but the downside may be increased risk for diverticulosis and colon cancer, which are much less common in the developing world.
