Ancestry DNA kits - have you done one?

Post by oliveoyl »

Hi Everybody
Has anyone had their DNA tested and would like to share about how the experience went for you? Is it worth it? Did curiosity kill the cat? I'm very tempted to try a DNA test.

Hi Olive
My husband and I did the 23 and me kits. It was interesting and fun. Now I just gave him an ancestry kit for his birthday. It’s a little addicting! Thinking about giving some to family as Christmas presents. I say go for it!

My husband, 2 daughters and I did the 23 and me test. It was interesting but daughter did something with the results that was more useful: uploaded to something called Promethease which analyzed each gene and conditions that you might have. I found my colon cancer gene, glaucoma gene, gout gene and a Parkinson's link. And my husband found a half brother! They were both adopted and raised as an only child so was quite a shock. Same father, different mothers. I say go for it, but be prepared for what you might find!
The brother lives near Houston and we are in central Texas so we have met up with him and wife once and hope to do so more.
