Dear Friend,
I'm 192 lbs. I take a cap and a half once a week. With low fiber diet it's almost possible to go output free for a week. I started taking iron and that gives me hard stool and this way I can make it till next time.
I mix the MoM with orange juice is just to take away the bad taste. You can use any juice. After 5 hours when the diarrhea starts force yourself to drink as much water or clear liquid as possible.
Steps:
Put on a new one piece open end pouch.
Mix the Milk of Magnesia and juice in a 8oz glass, drink that mix, but don’t drink anything until the diarrhea starts. The milk of magnesia absorbs the water from the intestines and that's how it cleans you out.
Nothing happens for 5 hours so do whatever you want.
Will have comfortable diarrhea for an hour and have to empty your bag about 5 times. Be close to a toilet and don't wait until the pouch completely fills up.
After you are done wear the empty pouch for a few more ours just in case
I found the coloplast stoma cap to be the best and I replace it every other day unless I get it too wet and see it peeling off.
If you want eat low fiber diet and take iron to reduce the chance for output.
If you consider this method consult your doctor and have regular blood test to check your magnesium level!!!!
All the best and don't hasitate to ask me more questions.

Thanks Laz, I'll give that a try, yes i hate the taste of that nasty stuff so ill try it with juice ,as for wearing a stoma cap for me that did not work, if just a tiny bit of mucus gets on my skin I break out fast and it looks as bad as it feels.I just want to make sure i'm getting cleaned out.. Thanks again

I'll post my results.....sassie

The Coloplast stoma cap is like a tiny round pouch about 3 inch diameter. It has the same adhesive, filter and even a cotton lining to absorb some mucus. It’s used exactly like pouches and only for filtering out occasional das release and storing some output.
All the best.

lp, I have stoma caps, but a part of skin is exsposed and any mucus that touchs my skin will make my skin so sore, last time i cut a gauze to lay around the stoma so no slime could get directly on my skin and that helped...As for MoM in orange juice,i just couldn't do it, i threw it all up..So im trying irrigating again as i type...." I hate MoM so much i just do not do good with liquid meds of any type...."its just me"

What does this group feel about taking Milk of Magnesium on a daily basis? I have had many obstructions do to adhesions and a hernia. So I take 15ml at night and 15 ml in the morning. Can you become laxative dependent on it? I have an Illeostomy so other laxatives I was told by my GI won’t work. Is it true other laxatives ex Senna, ect won’t work with an Illeostomy? Would love to know what others feel about this. Thanks.

Ginger mom:
I have an end ileostomy and use a tad of Miralax on a daily basis to keep the consistency of my output fairly liquid. I do this as a proactive means to keep partial obstructions at bay. I do this under the advisement of my colon-rectal surgeon.

Milk of Magnesia is similar to Miralax in effect, both being an osmotic laxative. Both act to bring water into the intestine and provide a helpful kinetic/motility nudge. The effect of making fecal output more liquid in consistency helps keep digested foodmaterial continue to pass through intestine that may be narrowed by adhesions or strictures.

You will likely not need a standard dose of MofM or Miralax with an ileostomy. Do use careful restraint in your initial dosing, as risk of dehydration and electrolyte disruption is high with an ileostomy. As a example, I use 1/3 of a single packet of Miralax.

Miralax and MofM are classed as a non-stimulant osmotic laxative. Both can be used without the risk of laxative dependency. Taking a divided dose, as you are, twice a day is often a more beneficial strategy then taking a larger dose once a day.

Be aware that it is NOT safe to use a stimulant laxative with an ileostomy (ex. Senna, Dulcolax, ExLax).

100% Concord grape juice and 100% apple juice are both helpful in thinning ileostomy output where adhesions/scar tissue are a concern for small bowel obstructions. Both have beneficial flavonoids. Look for a label that reads “100% grape/apple juice.” A juice blend or juice concentrate blend is not sufficient.
