Why Rotate??

Is there an advantage to change? I left the hospital with Convatec, 2-piece.close-end, and have not changed since. I am a devotee of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I don't know if I'm scared to try something new, which might be better (or worse), but I don't see the point, although the CyMed sounds interesting. Currently change the wafer every 4 days and pouches as needed, generally twice a day. As summer approaches, the low profile sounds attractive.

many change because they get rashes etc. if your happy all is good but sometimes what is fitted to some of us just isn't the best we can get or we switch cause of skin issues going back n forth to prevent that from happening..

Yep. If it works leave it be. I have o e manufacturer I use and no rashes or anything.
Convetec also.
They had Coloplast on me in the hospital and I relate it to that so swapped immediately.
Besides. Coloplast? Really? Think about the name. Colo-plast. Colon plaster. Lol.

This to me, is just one of those personal preference issues. We are all unique, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the next. I only use Hollister appliances. Mostly because I irrigate, and their 2 piece system is the one that works best for me. It's a little cumbersome, but the control I get from irrigating, hence the use of their 2 piece system, outweighs any benefits of a lower profile appliance. Like I said, personal preference.
I do see how rotating appliances is appealing to others however. I really like the Cymed products, and if I were to not be able to irrigate, I might very well switch to their products. They just didn't have a 2 piece system that was favorably interchangeable for my lifestyle.

I have mentioned that I rotate between manufacturer brands. I use the Coloplast Mio and the CyMed Microskin systems, interchangeably.

Why?

I have frail skin, sensitive skin owing to long-term use of corticosteroids. By rotating manufacturer wafers, my incidence of skin irritation (context dermatitis) has disappeared.

Skin can become sensitive to the composite formulation of a wafer from continued contact and exposure. Each manufacturer has a slightly different ingredient list and composite mix of what constitutes their wafer. By rotating manufacturer brands, for anyone with skin sensitivities or fragile skin, prolonged exposure is minimized and contact irritation is lessened.

Not everyone will need to rotate wafer brands. As OTDave remakes, personal preferences and personal needs will come to play in many of our ostomy product choices.

Hi,

I have “picky” skin and Hollister gives me no problems. I’ve worn the same pouching system since my ostomy surgery in 2009.

+1 more for hollister.
In nearly a year of hard use, I have had no skin issues at all despite being on 40+ mg daily prednisone, and subsequently Humera.

(I tossed the skin prep and went with rubbing alcohol as a skin cleaner, and tincture of benzoin to keep things stuck).

Could nearly always get 5-8 days out of a wafer, even with every other day showers.

The other thing to consider is that you might not be having any issues with what the hospital gave you, but maybe it could be even better. Let me explain: my hospital gave me clear pouches. Just clear plastic on both sides. Okay. No deal. Works just fine. Or so I thought!

When that pouch was on back order my supply company sent me a stop gap: a neutral colored, opaque pouch with a nice fabric-like layer on the outside. Wow! Suddenly, I didn’t feel obsessed about keeping it sparkling clean all the time (what you don’t see doesn’t hurt you!) and my skin around and beneath the pouch is suddenly less irritated. I now use a pouch for three or four days and wafers for up to seven! I had been changing both every single day because it looked yucky and I couldn’t stand it.

So, I encourage you to at least try a few other options. That backorder really improved my quality of life in ways I didn’t know was possible.

Good luck!

Melissa

well i was given hollister at the hospital and that was the huge sample pkg that arrived so i just went with it, but awhile ago a guy gave me convatec and i decided to try them WOW what a difference , ive had skin issues from the getgo and had to use tinture to try and keep me from itching myself to death, with convatec that has completed gone away... tonight after my bath i decided to put hollister wafer on , within 30mins. i started to feel itching and removed the wafer to find 3 tiny welts and redness..so that is one reason people also move to another product....

I agree on the clear pouches. I don't need to see what's in there. I've used opaque with fabric from the start.

well this isn't as simple as "if it ain't broke." if you eat hotdogs all your life, you don't know if a nice steak might taste a whole lot better?

for me the closed end bag is too limiting. I empty my bag whenever there is more than 2tablespoons in it. I generally have output early morning so I can empty, but why carry around stuff you don't have too? yeah too I do not like the idea of a 2 piece bag, too much to go wrong when being very active. and they are higher profile. I can wear a tight tee shirt with an empty bag and no one can tell.

I've used the same coloplast closed single use pouches for seven years - I need slight convexity although nobody could figure out why - my stoma sticks out and inch and I have a flat stomach, but whatever.

For me, a closed, single use pouch is what I like. I dont want the bulk of a two piece system and I have never had a skin problem replacing the pouch up to several times a day when necessary - my pattern seems to be no changes at all for two days and then 3 or 4 within an hour on the third day. I've definitely considered changing to a drainable bag for that reason - despite having a bowel movement only every three days, when I do its gallons of diarrhoea and I've had many, many disasters peeling the bag off when its full of liquid.

I have used Cymed one piece drainable for the past 15 yrs. I've tried some samples from other mfgs but always came back to Cymed. There was a time when I had to drive for about 4 days and my stoma got so ...... well I don't want to say "depressed" but it got sunken in from sitting with the seat belt on, that I had to get some convex samples from another mfg, but when it decided to stick it's self out again, I went back to the Cymed. I do agree w/ dogtalkerer, I like hotdogs but I also like sushi.
