Post surgery nausea

Hey everyone.

Just looking for a little advice here. I had my 2nd surgery (creation of j pouch) on March 20. I was in the hospital for 11 days in which I had a blockage so a NG tube was needed. I gagged so much from that I tore my stitches holding my stoma to my skin. After that they found an abscess which was drained but was not an infection just blood. All of this I can and have dealt with but the ass kicker is that I’m barely eating because I have been horribly nauseous since I had the blockage. Has anyone else had this problem? If so was there a cause or did it just take time to go away? I vomited once in hospital but not since. Just interested if this is normal or something to be looking more into and if not what did you do to cope? I’ve been taking gravol pretty regularly but it offers only some relief. Thanks for the help guys and girls

Are you still using/needing pain meds? Pain meds are notorious for causing nausea...especially on an empty stomach.

Hi David thanks for your reply. I am currently not using pains meds. Some extra strength Tylenol here and there but I stopped using opiates on the 27th of March so it’s been a while now

If you’ve gone through the usual gamut of zofran, compazine, phenergan and erythromycin, you might try Benadryl. Worked well for me when I was nauseated for 7 weeks postop. (After I figured that out, things got markedly better)

I found cold liquids made me nauseous, and had to give up ice for a while. My oncologist said that not eating can cause nausea, too. Try eating bland, easy to digest foods like crackers and see if that helps.

I also dealt with nausea following my ileostomy and revisions. The doctors kept telling me I couldn’t go home til I could eat and show it moved through. My Nausea was paralyzing. I tried to sip warm broth/tea and loose mashed potatoes or warm applesauce . Sometimes I also used a warm hot pad or a cool breeze. I hope you can get a hold of it soon.

I also had blockages after surgery. The first 2 landed me back in the ER. The worst pain I've ever had. Had 3 more after that but choose to stay home and scream for 7 hours but it eventually pasted. My doctors told me not to eat lettuce. I have not touched it since and have not had a blockage since.

Just want to say I was horribly nauseous after my operation and could not keep food in me! It took time, but I did get back to normal eventually. Knowing it would go away helped me cope.
