I have had a Brook Ileostomy for 15 years and recently read about the BCIR procedure. I have occasional appliance problems which are very frustrating and depressing. I'm quite sure my insurance would cover having this procedure but I'd like to hear from fellow ostomates who have undergone this procedure. I am 70 years old and in good health.

Eugene. Try posting this on the BCIR.COM site, they too have a discussion group. Also private message me and I will give you my thoughts on the procedure.

Eugene, I got my BCIR 6 years ago when medical problems made it necessary for my J pouch to be removed. I had a second opinion at Mayo to confirm the diagnosis and their surgeon recommended an ileostomy, citing my age (68) as the reason. This was an option that I strongly did not want. My excellent quality of life with the BCIR confirms that I made the right decision. Earlier this year, my article entitled, “Researching my Options” appeared in the UOAA magazine, The Phoenix, and can be read on the Quality Life Association’s website: qla-ostomy.org under “News”. The QLA website has other information about the BCIR that might be of interest to you. Please feel free to send me a PM with any questions that you have.
