I had been on disability with Crohn's disease not too long after high school graduation, had a colostomy in 1999, but currently in remission (even though it is still possible for flareups of the disease). I recently had a re-evaluation, and although SSA states that I would have some limitations, I should be able to work, so my benefits will stop completely. So that is what I am setting out to do, and seeing that I am in remission, I welcome the change. I am confident that I can eventually find employment, but the issue I am facing is that since my Social Security benefits will stop, so will my health insurance. Therefore, until I can sign up for a health insurance through a place of employment (which usually takes a while to come into effect), I will need help to be able to get my medication (in order to remain in remission) and my ostomy supplies. I could purchase some of this equipment out of pocket, but not enough to last, and the supply count that I would require (plus my medication) would be cost prohibitive seeing I have other expenses.

Is there anyone who has some ideas on how I can work around this so I can get my much needed ostomy supplies and medications?

Also, if this is not the right place for this post, I apologize. I just feel it does because it concerns (in part) my ostomy supplies which I cannot be without.

Depending on the state in which you live, it may be possible to sign up for insurance through ACA since, until you find employment, you may qualify as low income and ending SSDI seems like it would be a qualifying life event. Also, if your state has expanded Medicaid, you might qualify for Medicaid even after your SSDI stops (you possibly would qualify based on income, not disability status). Do you have a caseworker who could guide you?
Also, some ostomy supply manufacturers and some medication companies have patient assistance programs which provide a discount (sometimes even free supplies). You might try calling the company that makes your supplies and medicines (or go online) to investigate this. In any case, most ostomy supply manufacturers will send you free samples of supplies, which won't take care of long term issues but may help in the short term. YOu might also be able to get samples of meds from your doctor for the short term.
