Staying hydrated with an ileo
I'm sure you all know how important it is to stay hydrated if you have an ileostomy. Your colon used to absorb most of the liquid into your body and without it you can get high uric acid (Gout) and other issues. I recently started taking a supplement, I won't name the product but there are several out there. It is basically a salt/sugar/flavoring powder that you dissolve in 6-8 oz of water. I got grapefruit flavor and it's not too strong and very easy to drink it at one go. I think it has improved my gout and it has definitely given me more energy. I have even taken a couple of doses in the afternoon when I kind of rundown. PM me if you want the brand name, jmho but I think its a good product. Take care, Larry

Great stuff!
I use Hydralyte tablets, but I’m not sure if they’re available in the US. The problem with a lot of electrolyte drinks is they’re very high in sugar (like Gatorade), which can be counterproductive for high output. If you don’t mind the taste, you can also easily mix up St Mark’s Solution yourself, which is used in hospitals to prevent dehydration (recipe via Google, super cheap and simple). The other benefit of this is it doesn’t have potassium, which can become an issue if you’re drinking a lot of it every day.
Cheers

Re: Staying hydrated with an ileo
When home after surgery with my ileostomy I had difficulty keeping hydrated and warned that this would be a problem with dehydration and potassium. I started drinking Gatorade, but yes, very high in sugar, but found another product made by Gatorade called G2. It has only 12g of sugar, 75mg of potassium, 0g fat and 50 calories per 591 ml bottle. I live in eastern Canada and the price of 6 bottles was around ($7.99) high earlier this year, yet for some reason, most grocery stores are selling this product now for $3.99 - $5.99 for a 6 pk. This has solved my dehydration problem. I was also advised by a dietician to switch to decaf (not so bad).

Hi all I get the powder form of Gatorade and mix it to my taste, that way its not too sweet like premade stuff.
