Has Eakins changed their formula? Eakins is leaking !!!

Post by tlippy »

Been an ostomate 12 years and I have had a few leaks. Mostly my fault in forgetting to snap the Coloplast 11463 closure tab. But lately (past year) the leaks have been getting under the Eakin 839005 thin. I used to be able to wear a Coloplast 10503 wafer for 4 days before changing. I've upped the change time to 3 days and Eakins is still leaking. I would guess that during my 10 years, using the above system, at the end of the 4th day, my output has leaked all around the Eakins but stops when it hits the wafer barrier. Lately (past year) the leaks are getting worse. And the output is getting past Eakins and the wafer. My wafer UP procedure: I quit showering wafer day. I thought that was my problem. Maybe soap or oil? I pull off my old wafer, wipe the area with T.P., cleanse with 2 different adhesive removers, apply Sensi Care Barrier wipe 413501, put Eakins under my armpit to warm, also warm the wafer under my armpit. Apply and keep my hand over the wafer and pouch for 2 minutes. This past week I had to change all every day. Called Eakins yesterday and their Nurse, after questioning me, said I shouldn't need any Eakins - just a wafer! I tried that and so far I've gotten 48 hours wears without incident - going for 72 hours!!! The Nurse never did answer my question; has Eakin changed their formula? She is sending some different one piece systems. I have a buddy who called me a year ago and asked if I was still doing Eakin seals. He is getting leaks also after using them for 11 years. This is the reason I no longer have confidence in Eakins claim to fame, "If it's leakin, it's time for Eakin." Anyone else have this experience?

I haven't noticed any changes with my use on the eakin 839005. Try asking Convatec directly for some free samples and compare. Could be your distributor storing/shipping them poorly. If the packages are exposed to a lot of heat, could ruin their effectiveness. Having another supplier send them out, and test those, will help rule out some things.

I use the regular ones which are 839002. I haven't had a problem while using them but I have had them become deformed in the package. This seems to have started after they stopped covering them in paper and changed to the transparent one. And it seems to happen when I travel but I don't have them in checked luggage. Anyway when it occurs I call Convatec and get replacements. The ones I am using now are probably from late 2018 as I received them in February 2019. I change about once a week....
btw, I didn't know it was possible to call Eakins....interesting as I'd like to report the deformation issue.

I had similar occasional problems with the Eakins. I cut the seal into quarters and only use a quarter of the seal to cover old scar tissue. I tried Safe N Simple seals and had no problems. Thus, I have switched to Safe N Simple.

I don't know if the Eakins were mishandled, improperly stored or old.

Since I posted this a week ago, I've replaced 2 wafers without using Eakin. No more leaks. All my leakages can be attributed to Eakin. ConvaTec recommended and sent samples of a one piece: 4416718. They had sampled this 2 years ago and my opinion is that this is the worst product I have tried. It's impossible to close without a mess. ConvaTec did not/will not give any reason for the Eakin failures except that, "with your stoma you really don't need any seal".
