Parastomal Hernia Repair

Post by Chris Penna »

My surgeon is doing a quick fix on my parastomal hernia but I'm wondering if anyone has had this type of repair. He is going to make an incision and push the protusion back into the stomach and then stitch the opening closed. He said this may or not work and says the hernia might come back. I've already had my stoma relocated and I don't want the mesh repair at this time but my hernia is getting larger and I would rather try this before going for the risker mesh repair. Would appreciate any advice!

Thank You!

I had an parastomal hernia repair done in 2014. Yes my hernia is gradually coming back. But I suspected this would happen. I power walk, and the surgeon feels this is probably the culprit, but surgeon feels the power walking is the best thing I can do.

Why are you against the mesh repair? I had the mesh repair and had no problems. My stoma has not been relocated. Do you wear any type of hernia belt?

Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

Too much risk of infection and I would have to have it done in a hospital 4 hours away.......plus I live alone and just not ready to risk it.

I think it may depend on the type of mesh used. I know in the past, they were some problems, but I believe they have improved on that issue. Like I say, I had no problems, and I don't really remember hearing the rick of infection. What I do remember is the surgeon wanting to use a certain type of mesh because as he put it, "it's the best out there". That was 6 years ago.

Had my hernia repaired sept 25 2019,It was huge and the bulge was below the stoma and like 10 inches round and 4 inches

above the rest of my skin, could see it in all my clothes, My surgeon did not use any mesh,He stitched it together, said at this time that was the best way...So happy its GONE !!!

My surgeon has recommended stitching it together also at this point. How long did it take to recover from the procedure? I was told depending on pain level I could go home the same day. The hernia may and probably will come back but it could take a few years. Would appreciate any input regarding this procedure. My surgeon made it sound really easy and non-invasive!
