Need advice on diet & pain after reversal (with Covid complication)

Post by mercat72 »

Is it common after reversal surgery to feel normal for awhile, and then be struck with severe pain for no apparent reason? My husband, H, would welcome advice from those who've had revesal surgery. H had colon cancer and then an ileostomy for one year. He had reversal surgery in late July, and ileus followed. He was hospitalized for a total of three weeks. On the cusp of discharge,he tested positive for Covid. Having been vaxxed, his only apparent symptom was a scratchy throat. Next stop: 3 weeks in skilled nursing, where he quarantined. By the time he was discharged, he was on a soft food diet. He started to eat normally. Although he had the inevitable diarrhea, he was relatively comfortable for the first two weeks at home. Then he was struck with severe stomach and intestinal pain and could not connect it to anything he'd eaten. A modified BRAT diet relieves the agony and he's added a couple things, like jello and saltines. But eating anything else and the pain returns with a vengeance. MDs have no wisdom other than suggesting Metamucil, which H started yesterday. We would welcome hearing about similar experiences. Do any foods increase or decrease the pain? Can you eat anything resembling a normal, healthy diet? Many thanks, Mercat
