I need to opinions and I am reaching out. I have had an ileostomy for 49 years. I am 72 and had UC. I had a incontinent for 6 1/2 years and then had a Kock pouch. I had a revision on the K pouch 13 years after and was fine for 30 years. The last 2 1/2 years I have had problems. 5 surgeries, 2 were revisions. The first revision did not work and was performed wrong. The 2nd is fine expect I am having a hard time getting the catheter in. 3 surgeries have been for hernias. 1 was fine and the other two were in the same place. I have another one in the same place near the stoma. I am having surgery next month. The surgeon suggests that I become incontinent. Please provide any suggestions. My husband and I are thinking to keep the K Pouch since it worked so well for a long time. Thank you

Thank you for contacting us on this Discussion Board. I personally, have had an 'incontinent' small bowel diversion for many years. There have been numerous advances in pouching systems, skin care products, barrier wafers, etc. during that time. Most of the major manufacturers would be happy to share information about their products. Please know that whatever your decision, you do have more options in ostomy care available than with your first surgery. Hopefully, one of our members having had similar experiences will read your post & respond.
This Board does contain a Forum for those who have had continent ostomy surgery (Continent Diversions) in the Discussion Forums list. Another good source of info is our UOAA website which contains many first-person articles specific to the type of surgery they have experienced.
Again, thank you for joining our Discussion Board.

Hi Sheryl: I just checked out the UOAA website (ostomy.org) for info on the Winter issue of The Phoenix Magazine. Although my own copy has not yet arrived, there is an article in it regarding continent ostomies. Living with a Continent Ileostomy by Bill Van Clief. The author is a noteworthy & active contributor.
