Need an extended collection canister for driving

I drive for a living and having to stop all the time to dump the bag is becoming a real chore. Sometimes stuck in traffic or behind an accident is causing very perilous situations.

Any suggestions for a non-messy, odorless extended collection canister system that works with otosmy bags?

I could mickey mouse something from home Depot but rather have the bugs worked out.

Thanks

Not sure if they still sell them but maybe a diaper genie? They have their own bagging system saving your pouch bags.

I know you use the one piece system, so guessing you're need a way to dump that out. Good thing we have options. Might try two piece system.

Yes it seems unnecessary and excessive to replace the bag portion of a two piece system several times a day. It's still going to smell and output will leak during the bag changes. Plus the tugging etc may loosen the wafer as I have a convex for a near flush stoma, so the belt remaining tight is vital.

I was thinking of something I could stand outside the vehicle for a few seconds, dump the output, toss in a used piece of toilet paper and seal shut.

Zip lock baggies may do the trick in a pinch and they are disposable. I was thinking of something I could connect to the bag and the canister sits between my legs in the car.

I started with the Hollister two piece system. Having tested Coloplast samples, I'd say they are less superior to the Coloplast. I realize they both probably have varying ranges in quality though. Trying to compare apples to apples but I don't know much about what other pouches Coloplast offers.

So, bottom line is, the Hollister pouches are probably made to be disposed after at least 12 hours. Typically I go through 2 boxes of 30 per month.

I can't say what the difference is in cost yet in comparison with Coloplast.

Lastly, I don't have an ileostomy but from reading your posts it sounds more difficult to manage.

Two boxes of 30 pouches a month!! Gee, I hope you have good insurance!!
I only use a few more than that many in a year....

I'm guessing colostomy pouches are different than the ones I use for my ileostomy...

I'm using a new one piece about every 3-5 days on average, trying to increase that to once a week.

I'm not familiar with what insurances do or don't cover with regard to our ostomies. One thing I have recognized is that ileostomy and colostomy activity are not the same. The appliances may be similar but how and how often they need changed differ.

I've been in this new life for 4 years now and still trying to figure out what normal is. The only thing I could figure is what mileage insurance expected I will get. Now that I have finally come to this forum a couple months ago, I enjoy picking up good advice and occasionally getting to offer up some of my own. Because yours is an ileostomy I'm not going to presume I am using too many pouches.
Another point to make is the fact that I am using a closed pouch 2 piece system. I believe if I were using an open pouch, I wouldn't be using as many. However the current ones I'm using do not last much longer than 12 hours with or without waste. Thinking they must be low quality and perhaps cost less.

Ahh...the old "we are cheaper, but you'll us more and cost more in the end" trick. Kind of like disposable razors.

However it could be that given the nature of your situation that is the best solution. I'll read up more.on it.

Ah yes Wikipedia has some good info on the subject, apparently one can choose to use either disposable two piece system or a one piece drain able. Just like a illeostmy.

However with a illeostmy the frequency of drainage required is higher as it doesn't use the colon (which extracts water) and with the colostomy it depends where the stoma is placed. Higher up, drain able may be better. Lower disposable may be better.

So I'm guessing the bag system is the same for both then.

Okay good, I was thinking perhaps I made a wrong decision going with the one piece. However for driving it would seem a two piece would be better, except for the fact that it stinks bad, even with odor control and I don't want to bring it back into the vehicle. So since I'm going to have to dispose of it I'm not going to pollute and leave used illeostmy bags all over the place.

But if I dump into the grass in a pinch, the ground bacteria will make quick work of it and it disappears quickly as well. The toilet paper will disintegrate as soon as it gets wet, I can pour some bottled water on it.

Large cups with lids come in handy as I can simply get out and dump into that then place into a trash can.

I don't think an extended canister system in the vehicle is going to work, the smell and possible explosion hazard of bacteria producing gas, could be neutralized but even porta potties stink quite a bit regardless. Why there is a vent stack coming out the roof of them.

My favorite road trick is to use a waste high garbage can, just dump into that then wipe and throw in the toilet paper.

Some sort of combination of a zip lock baggie with a charcoal air filter with a two piece system may be the solution. When full just zip it closed and replace, put the used pouch into a small cooler between ones legs on the floor. However likely during that brief period there will be smell involved. 🙄

Maybe :
Zip lock bag, add some kitty litter for odor control, empty pouch in said zip lock, seal, place in green trash bag like Hefty. You can knot the trash bag loosely so you can reopen it as needed.
When you reach your destination or place with a garbage can or dumpster, place well closed trash bag there. Or, check out a camping store for products like wagbags and bio-gel bags.
I can't think of anything for 100% no odor while emptying the pouch. I do find eating parsley works for me a bit. There are things like devrom tabs, chlorophyll pills and liquids (get from healthfood stores) but I've not used any of these kinds of products in years. I guess there's always lysol spray or Febreee.

I'm getting the feeling other brands don't include garbage bags for disposing pouches? Hollister does.

Coloplast provides disposable bags, I only use them with a bag change at home as I use a one piece convex. So every three to five days.

I could bring them with me and dump into that, but then I have to bring it back into the vehicle if there is no place to dispose of it. Even double bagged it's going to be an issue bringing it back inside, I carry customers so they rather not know anything.

Okay, I've resorted to better diet and food portion control.

I have now received my first order of Coloplast 2 piece open end pouches and did get disposable bags with them. I also got a couple other barrier rings to test. One I thought you might be interested in! It has a different side on one side meant for more fluid output. The white side is intended to go against the skin and is SUPER tacky!

 Safe N Simple Secure - Longevity Skin Barrier Ring SNS684H2
  • This seal has two unique sides of two different hydrocolloid formulations - the skin side is white and contains zinc oxide - it has low absorbency but offers great tack and maintains its integrity while the wafer side has great tack and high absorbency and will swell and turtleneck while providing a great seal to the wafer.
I'm currently testing my second one. Unfortunately the first one did not last much longer than any other I've tested so far. Still only getting about 4 days before feeling the burn. I probably should have replaced the wafer a day earlier as I had some skin damage.

With that first test and damaged skin, I went back to my standby that has medicine in it:

 Adaptâ„¢ CeraRingâ„¢ Slim Flat 2" (48mm) Outer Diameter HO8815
  • Flextend M (extended wear) skin barrier formulation infused with ceramide
  • Convenient, individually packaged transparent trays
  • Not made with natural rubber latex
  • CeraRing Barrier Rings (Flat)

Good to know George thanks. 😊

.

See my latest thread here, I think this should help you get a longer bag wear time.

Try it with the rings of course, just make sure it's covering skin around the stoma and pressed down onto clean, very dry and non oily skin for a fantastic skin bond. I use a medical tape tube that's exactly the same size as the ring/paste area.
