Kock

I had a Kock done in 1979 when it was new. It lasted 24 years. At the 22nd year I had pouchitis once. I also had stones that were elimated the same way Kidney stones are. I also had a slipped nipple valve which made inserting the catheter uncomfortable. This sometimes happens with the Kock. The surgeon tried his best was unable to fix it and I ended up with a standard ileo. BUT, I went to Dr. Fazio for a consult in regards to second Kock and I now have another.
So, in other words, despite what I experienced with the first (keeping in mind that I had 22 years of trouble free time), I liked the benefits of the Kock more than wearing an external pouch and opted for another.
The disadvantage of the Kock ; few doctors are doing them. Be prepared to travel. There are some surgeons who although they do not install new Kocks they will treat patients with them (I have one one hour from me). Unlike when wearing an external bag where gas escapes into the bag, with the Kock gas builds up and can only be expelled by inserting a catheter.
I love having a Kock. I travel and am active. There are some foods I stay away from and don't miss.

Is it difficult to cath and keep up with a cath? We are looking at options for our 11 yr old son. He has a j-pouch but it is not working for him. Also, can you tell be about Dr. Fazio? Where is he or she located?

It is not difficult at all to empty the pouch. I have had mine since 1990, and catherize 3 times a day. For the 13 years prior to that I had a traditional ileostomy. Dr. Victor Fazio (Cleveland Clinic) did my Kock Pouch and I very highly recommend him !
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.
