wait a year before kock pouch?

Post by cynnycal »

So Dr Fazio's nurse tells me i need to have my colon out and an ileostomy first, and then a year....a YEAR later i can have the kpouch done.
I was told the scar tissue will soften up with time. But a whole year? not just like, 6 months?
has anyone else had experience with this too?

cynnycal,

I'm wondering why he would not do it right off. Perhaps there's a reason for the answer you got.

Fazio must have had a good reason to recommend that.

I will tell you that when my first Kock was removed and an end ileo constructed..the surgeon said he would discuss with me the option of another Kock AFTER ONE YEAR with the standard ileo.

Guess the one year of healing is beneficial to the body.

i'm sure there's a reason, but when i asked his nurse, she said "scar tissue softens over time"
er....oohhhkay.

I have a sneaking suspicion it may have something to do with the cancer. b/c that would be the only other factor that most of you guys don't have.

maybe just to see about reoccurance? but even if there was a reoccurance....how would that affect the pouch? if cancer was in the rectum....where would it reoccur?
heh, okay, i realize you guys aren't doctors...it's something i'll have to ask him. it's just so hard to get ahold of them...phone tag gets really really old.
