Mom w/koch pouch post op cancer surgery..WORRIED ABOUT MEDS!

hello,
My mother is just recovering from breast cancer surgery up at Mayo Clinic in MN. Her doctor has put her on Percocets and she is really worried what reaction the percocets might have on her body with her koch pouch. She's really worried about any meds she may be on now after the surgery. Are there any meds or anything in general she should be concerned about after having breast cancer surgery with her also having a koch pouch before this? Thank you.

Oh Derek! I'm sorry to hear that about your mom. I hope she's doing well. Can't they leave a catheter in the pouch while she's on the mend?
I really hope she's feeling better real soon!

I hope your mom is doing alright.
I am not a doctor and cannot tell you if the meds will affect her adversely. I do know there is a colorectal group at the Mayo who most likely know very well how to handle Kocks (eventhough they no longer do them).
Maybe you ( or the oncologist) could contact them and discuss your concerns.
The one thing to know is that meds taken in pill form sometimes do not dissolve and therefor are not absorbed by the system. I just watched a decongestant clog my catheter today b/c it was still fairly whole.

I would just check to make sure none of the meds are "time-release". They may not stay on the body long enough to dissolve. As long as the doctor knows your mom has a Kock Pouch, which I'm sure he/she does, she should be okay.

My husband has had many other health issues other than his Koch Pouch over the years, and has taken many different types of meds. Nothing he has ever taken has had an adverse affect on his pouch, but there have been many times that the pharmacist had to come up with a liquid formula of the medication because the pills/capsules wouldn't dissolve. If your mother takes a capsule and it comes out much as it went in, she didn't get the benefits and would need to tell the doctor. Maybe you could ask the doctor or pharmacist about preparing the meds. in liquid form. Your mother will be in my prayers, and I hope everything goes well!
