Irrigation

I am new to site. I have had a K pouch since 1973 due to UC. No problems. I have not been in touch with any other people who have a K pouch until last week. Pretty much figured things out as I went along.
I looked through the forum and noticed that one topic discussed irrigation and using sterile water. Heck, I have been using tap water for years and it seems to be doing the trick. I irrigate or wash out almost everytime that I empty pouch. If you use sterile water, you have to have a sterile catheter or you contaminate the water. Who told you folks that you should use sterile and why? Just seems like an expense and worry that one does not have to do.

I also use tap water or bottled water if I'm traveling where the water is questionable to irrigate.

I've had a Kock since 1979 and didn't come to the computer till I needed info on ostomies and found this site as well as others. I too, just figured things out for 24 years.

The people who are irrigating with sterile water have continent pouches (Indiana pouch is one name for it) because their bladders have been removed.

Didn't know about that procedure before I hooked up to the internet.
Always something to learn

Tom,

According to Dr. Fazio, using tap water here in the States is fine. Its when you go overseas or even outside the continental US that you need to be careful of the water quality.
