UOAA Discussion Board

Hello everyone! We are new to this board, but we do belong to Shaz's board. My daughter had a 2nd jpouch surgery done at the Cleveland Clinic done in Feb 07 and her reversal on 6/27/07. We are wanting to talk to others who have had 2 jpouches done and a reversal. We just have a few questions.
She is having about 20 bm's a day (which is expected), but none of the ointments have helped, but Ilex. She's tried Calmoseptine, A&D, Desitin, powders, and other stuff, but she is having a hard time still. She is not taking Immodium regularly but we are working on that too. She said it's not helping her. Should I put her on a schedule for the immodium or should she take it before she eats and how much? She is afriad to take Metamucil also, she heard from someone that it will loosen the stool, so we are very confused!
If anyone wants to input on this feel free to do so, we could really use some help We would love to hear from anyone!

You might consider asking this question on the j-pouch webboard. There are many people there that have j-pouch redos and should be able to help you out.

2o bm's a day seem like a high total to me and 10 bm's a day would sound normal to me...even if you redo a pouch it doesn't mean you should be worse off on the amount of bm's you have but it's true complications can more likely arise in folks who have gone through major repair of j pouch...i recommend trying loperamide 2 mg tablets and take one before meals and see if this helps...j pouch.org is a great website for help with a lot of people to help you and we do have a forum here for j pouchers but it's rarely used on here

I used to have a j-pouch and it sounds to me like thickening up the stool would help. Is it very watery? I used Metamucil without problems with my j-pouch. It is a soluble fiber which will absorb liquid and make sort of a gel. This makes it easier to "hold on" longer. Other soluble fiber foods also helped me... applesauce, bananas, pasta, oatmeal and so on.

Metamusil adds bulk to the diet, which helps with constipation for people with colons, so possibly that is the source of confusion? Although if it has artificial sweeteners in it that might cause loose stool.

If Imodium doesn't help lomotil might, although that is a prescription medication. I would talk to your doctor, though. 20 BM a day seems high to me, I didn't have that many unless I had active pouchitis - 8 to 10 would be more normal, even when I first had my j-pouch.

I found that when my posterior got really sore taking sitz baths in Epsom salts helped a lot. Also, rinsing my behind instead of wiping with toilet paper helped reduce the abrasion. I used plain vaseline - it protected the skin.
