ileal conduit vs. kock pouch with urethral diversion

Post by DonP »

I'm having my bladder removed on February 14. I have a choice of a neo bladder with urethral diversion or an ileal loop (as the doctor calls it). Does anyone out there have a urethral diversion? What are the pros and cons? I'm 73 years old and very active.

I have had both, I started off with the ileal conduit- where you wear an external pouch. This surgery is not as involved and in someways it is a shorter recovery, all you need to do afterwards is learn how to change the pouch and how to care for it. When it comes to the neo-bladder you will have a longer surgery and you will also have to follow a strict schedule of when to empty the pouch/neo bladder. Ask about the possibilty that you may not be able to urinate on your own. Some people are unable to do so and need to catheterize themselves in order to urinate. How would you feel about that if that was the case? Do ask if your doctor if they have any patients that you can talk to that have had the neo-blader done. Let us know what you end up having done. We are here to help you through it all.
