What is life like with S-pouch or similar for colitis?

I'm about to have colectomy and am trying to decide between ileostomy vs. pouch. I'm in my mid 40's. I'm married, so vanity isn't critical, but I like active water sports like diving and windsurfing. I'm most interested in hearing people's experience with the pouch or ileostomy. Nighttime evacuation sounds undesireable. Is this common? Anal leakage? General lifestyle and satisfaction stories appreciated. Thanks!

Technically I have an "S" pouch....and it pretty much rocks my world. Best decision I ever made. It has it's days where I get mild pouchitis, but compared to having to deal with an ostomy, possible skin irritations, supplies...... it's pretty easy to deal with it. I had nighttime leaks early on.
I'm coming up on the 5 yr anniversary of my s-pouch I was 24.
If you have crohn's.....a j/s pouch is a no no, if you've got UC I say go for it. BUT do realize that people do have problems with the pouch, some even are re-diagnosed with crohn's.
Be sure to check out

I had my reversal in june 05' its ok I wouldnt say its great but I'm happy that I did it to see if it would work. For me i had to change almost my whole diet to avoid blockages, craps, gas and lots of bowel movements,I average about 12 times a day and 1 at night.
Tried everything under the sun to lower my frequency.
I would agree with other post to check out jpouch.org site their are many people that have a better time with their jpouch or whatever one you get.
us folks with internal pouches only buy toilet paper that is very soft with aloe and we stock up on calmoseptine cream for the bottom.
