Recommendations For Updated Website

Post by TheFallGuy »

It would be nice if you added an attachment at the bottom of the screen so people who have no clue on how to post pictures would finally have the ability to do that and I know it was recently posted on just how one could able to that using the current system but with the updated website couldn't you make it easier by simply adding an attachment at the bottom of the screen or some far easier manner to display photos you want to share with everyone...It's not like it's just the regular posters who have figured out how to do are the only one doing this but the moderators as well have posted pictures with everyone else...It's frustrating as a regular participant on this website not being able to post pics (do you know how long Sandy has been waiting to see a picture of me!!! lol) and coming across a fellow poster who really excited about sharing something in their lives but is unable to share it with you or tries their hardest to hand type a link in to where you might see their photos but probably know not many or anyone for that matter may even figure it out.....I know you dont want to open the floodgates and have everyone posting pics but could at least give that ability to do so in the Behind the Pouch topic since it is about everything else that's going on your life anyway....That way you keep photos centralized in one location where people can share and most people share their photos there anyways....Bob can you work something out while your changing things and know a lot of people would appreciate it :)

Cee -

That personal preference already exists. Look at the area immediately under this message - there are two white lines which address display of messages. One says "all posts" and the other says "oldest first" - you can change that one to 'newest first' so you can see the most recent messages at the top.

Okay, I was all excited by that news, Linda, but it appears that I still have to scroll down and select 'new messages' on each thread. I can't find where I can just select that in my preferences and be done with it. Am I still doing something wrong?

There should be a little black arrow pointing to an orangeish colored paper with a corner turned down before posts that have new messages. If you click on that orangeish paper, it will take you to the newest post so you don't have to scroll down to it. :)

I think the things TheFallGuy suggested aren't something Bob can add/fix because if i'm not mistaken, the phpBB Group is the company who coded and built the forum the UOAA uses. So I think the best idea would be to go to their website and make the suggestions there.

just my 2 cents, but I bet the mods, or Bob can fill us in.

I thought that adding 'dollies' or pictures to posts was also an issue of bandwidth or whatever it's called.

In actuality, if posters want others to see their photos, they can upload them to any number of photo websites (many are free) and give out a link to people to see them. Then their friends and relatives not on this board can see them as well.

Mara has the right idea ... to show photos within the body of your mesaage set up an account with something like Photobucket (it's free) and upload your photos there. Near each picture will be a URL that you can use to display your photos here or on other web-based applications.

You can see this at the Photobucket site for the UOAA 2007 conference:
http://s241.photobucket.com/albums/ff15 ... onference/

Under the photo of the guy's back are 4 different URLs, depending on what you plan to use them for. You would use the IMG one for this purpose.

Then you come here and use the html coding to point us to where the photo is located. You will create a string of characters that looks like this:

Image

The nice part about this is that we can see your great photos but they don't take up space or "bandwidth" in the UOAA database.

There is another kind of space that can be a problem - if your photo is really big it will look HUGE on the Forum and will make it necessary for everyone to scroll back and forth in order to read the text of other messages in the thread. So please downsize your photos before linking them.

Here's the same photo I mentioned above, using the process I described. Initially it was 1012 by 600, and exhibited the size problem ... it was wider than the screen by 50%. I used the resizing option right in Photobucket to cut it by half, to get the more pleasing size you see here.

Image

AVATARS - the ones that appear with your profile, are a different story. On your profile page, way at the bottom, you will see directions to upload an image from your own computer files - or elsewhere. The crucial element is the size, they must be very small. To quote from the Avatar Control Panel: "its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 6 KB." You can use all kinds of image manipulation software to achieve that size.

Hi Linda....thanks for the response...I read what you recommended and if you want to set up an account with facebook or photo sharing site and post a url everytime you want to show photos that people can link too what your suggesting is a great idea but what if I want to simply show one pic of a new dog I just got and want an immediate response from the other posters on the forum and dont have to worry if everyone who's opened wanting to read my post doesnt have to worry about linking to another photo site that they have no clue where I am taking them to (there are people on here who wont go on websites like these or are comfortable linking to them) or that you click on that never work....I am not great figuring things out on my computer and just learned how to link other people to a website I want them to visit and have used a computer for over ten years so their are people like me who just dont get links, urls etc....If an occasional photo takes up that much of the computers information why dont we update our system to handle that with no problem and the J Pouch group has forum where you can post photos and it doesnt seem to concerned on how much computer space is taken up for photos...I think having something like that in the Behind the Pouch forum would be great and would love to hear Bob chime in or if he can talk to the company that runs this program to see what he can do...

What Linda means is you upload your photos to facebook, photobucket, etc, and ther will be several link options. One of them will be "<img src="photobucket link goes here"</a>.

With that code, the user browsing the forum's computer will follow the link to the picture, and where you put the code on your topic/response, the photo will appear.

Jeffrey,

You will see your picture on this forum by doing what Linda is saying. You will see it just like she has put the picture in of the guy wearing the shirt.

She is just giving you instructions on how to do it so it doesn't use bandwidth in the UOAA database.

You do need an account at Photobucket or somewhere to host your pictures. Everyone will see your picture immediately when they read your message - they won't have to click on a link and go to the Photobucket site. Just follow Linda's instructions. :)
