BOARD SOFTWARE REVERTED TEMPORARILY TO OLDER VERSION

Three days ago, we upgraded this board from phpBB2 to phpBB3. I think people were getting used to the new software and learning to like it, along with the board's new look.

Unfortunately, today, we suffered a serious problem that brought down our new board software. We hope we can resolve this problem soon, but haven't done so yet. And since we know you all want your discussion board "fix," I've brought back our older board for now. Please understand that what you're viewing now is our 'old' board as it existed Friday afternoon when I took it down in preparation for the upgrade. None of the new registrations or new postings made in our 'new' board after I brought it up Sunday evening are present in this 'old' board.

We'll continue to work on the problem afflicting our new software, and as soon as we can solve it, we'll bring the 'new' board back up. At that time, any messages you post now in this 'old' board will disappear. Similarly, any new users who register in this 'old' board would also be gone, but to avoid that problem, I've disabled any new registrations in this 'old' board.

Incidentally, another reason why I've brought back our old board and posted this message is because of all the e-mails I've been receiving asking what's wrong with the board. I didn't want to have to reply individually to all those e-mails!

Patience is a Virtue Bob, Take your time and do not feel rushed.

I have a saying, Have you ever noticed there is never time to do it right the first time, but always time to do it over.

I appreciate all you are doing, Keep up the good work....

Our new phpBB3 board, which we'd launched on March 23, suffered its third major "crash" last night, after having previously gone down on March 26 and March 31. I was hopeful that it would run stably following a change I'd implemented on April 2, but that hasn't been the case. So I've brought up our old phpBB2 board again.

Now we face a difficult decision: whether to keep trying to make phpBB3 work (perhaps by redoing the phpBB2 to phpBB3 upgrade using a different technique than I used originally during the weekend of March 21-23), or to give up on phpBB3. It's possible that phpBB3 simply will not run stably in the sort of shared hosting environment where our website is hosted currently.

For now, while we decide what to do, new registrations in this phpBB2 board remain disabled, as they were during the two previous recent occasions when I brought back this 'old' board. However, if we decide to give up on phpBB3, I'll restore ability to register and, in fact, everybody who has registered in our 'new' board since March 23 will need to re-register in this 'old' board.

If we decide to stay with phpBB2 for now, we won't be able to stay with it indefinitely because the phpBB developers will stop supporting this "legacy" release at some point (although they haven't yet announced a date when they'll terminate support). So we'll need to keep an eye toward converting to something else. It just isn't clear that phpBB3 will be a viable option.

I meant to continue the discussion of the board repair and instead, by mistake, started a new topic "fixing board". Please view my question there as a continuation of this topic. thank you.

old vs new

perhaps I'm an old "fuddy-duddy" but I much prefer the old board. It's easier to read, easier to find new messages, organized better. I can click on "view posts since last visit" and get an instant picture of what I haven't read. The new board has a similar feature, but is more difficult to track the topics.

Well, I'll repeat myself (I posted on another thread), I much prefer the old board too, the font is not as tiny and when you click on 'mark topics read', bygollee, it does it! And for some reason, I got used to seeing the name of the poster on the left side, rather than the right.

Was the old board broke and that's why it was 'fixed'? :D

I must be having a 'dumb day' because I didn't think they brought the traditional coke! And how can you see what you have already observed (posts) when you sign on?

As I said.....a dumb day for me. LOL

Theres an old saying, "if it works don't fix it"

Is it possible, that until the time comes that this isnt supported, that you can keep this board?

I agree with the others, I dont really care for the new one.

Thanks for all the hard work you all do, and for your dedication to this very helpful site.
