Flemmart - It is sad to hear of the passing of one so 'young' and so important to our folks. I took the liberty of amending your list/message at the top of page 4, to remove Dr. Launer's name.

It is crazy that since the switch to the J-Pouch practically nobody will do the Kock Pouch. For those of us who have had our rectums removed, it is the only continent option available to us. I live in Boston- a medical mecca according to some- and yet not one surgeon here does the Kock pouch. I made an appointment with one surgeon, because his secretary swore he did "every kind of reversal there is"... but he didn't do the Kock pouch or BCIR. It is more than just not being able to go out of state to get the procedure done initially. If you have a problem, you don't want to have to go several hours away to get it looked at or take care of. Its not right.

Dr. Launer did my Kock Poouch in 1989. I now live in the Phoenix area and found Dr. Jacques Heppell, who is familiar with Kock Pouches, at Mayo Hospital in Phoenix.

I live in New York and my surgeon was Dr. Stephen Gorfine at Manhattan Surgical. His partner, Dr. Joel Bauer, might ring more of a bell since he is older but i highly recommend Dr. Gorfine. He is a real human being, he understands that people aren't just patients, he is calm and not an alarmist, does only the necessary tests/procedures, and is just the greatest doctor for me. I do not know how i would have gotteb through anything without him.

Dr. Bauer is also a very great doctor who does kock pouches too.....it's more his personality that I am not a fan of. But, everyone is different! Let me know if you want to chat. I had a kpouch for over 5 years.

good luck!

And Gerald reports via email:
"I had a urinary koch pouch installed in 1990 by Dr. George Webster at Duke University, Durham, NC. I catheterize every 3 Hrs./less. My normal/athletic activities are not curtailed -- at 81, I'm able to bowl in our Sr. league. The only downside for me is having to set the alarm clock for awakening during the nite. Hope this info is helpful."

Thanks to both of you. Anyone else?

I am finding this post interesting as I was advised over a year ago that Dr. Webster does not do continent diversion procedures.

Duke is a great resource.

This is a helpful topic to keep posted, as things are updated in the community we are able to learn who is doing things now and who is nolonger doing them. That way, we can provide the most accurate info to people and guide them in directions to turn, from those who are seeking care by the suggested physicians.

Thank you, all, for your input and continued following of this topic.

Re: Docs who understand Kock Pouch?

Post by JoAnn1950 »

My mom is 90 yrs old now and her Koch pouch has never had any major problems in the past 44 yrs or so. Dr. David Sung from Santa Monica, CA, who learned the procedure from Dr. Koch of Sweden himself, did a phenomenal job after eight hours of surgery. She had a catscan today (2/23/18) of her abdominal area and the radiologist saw something that concerned him and called her GP right away. Our doctor recommended we contact a referred surgeon immediately to find out what’s going on. My first instinct is to notify Dr. Sung. I called his number but his voicemail is full. I found this very unusual and I’m hoping I can get a hold of him on Monday morning. We live in Las Vegas now and will definitely travel to Dr. Sung in Santa Monica if we have to. If all else fails I’m looking for a referral in Las Vegas or Southern California by Monday morning. If this message can get to Dr. Sung my moms name is Rose LoVecchio and I know that he will know who she is and contact us. Thank you in advance, Rose’s daughter Jo Ann Maldonado

Dr Irwin Gelernt gave me Kock pouch in 1977. I had zero problems. It was a God send after a conventional ileostomy.
Unfortunately from radiation for another issue I had scar tissue blockage and Dr Gelernt had passed away. Another surgeon in that office was just supposed to unkink the blockage and not go anywhere near the stoma even though he asked if he could make it more attractive? I told him NO. I had no leakage and no problem. Leave it alone and I wrote that on the surgical permission slip. He ignored my non permission and he redid the stoma. I was shocked when I woke up. It was completely changed and I had leakage from day one, after no problems for over 25 years. He changed the quality of my life and of my family as I have to intubate every 2 hours or more and other complications due to his surgery. So..it really depends on who does the surgery. Dr Gelernt had gone to Sweden and studied with Dr Kock.
