2019 National Convention

Post by To Dream a Dream »

Hello to all who are there. Cyber challenged & not a member of social media, I have been attempting to navigate both Facebook & Twitter clandestinely to see what is going on. Dr. Rood's original appliance appears suspiciously to be the original United pouch (& hideous cement) that I was introduced to in '77. Yes, time's have changed, but believe it or not, it was still considered state-of-the-art back then. (Have I sufficiently dated myself???)
My best to all, especially JimBob, our UOAA officials, Webmaster & fellow Discussion Board devotees. Stay safe. Enjoy & make lots of friends. God bless.

Just visited the convention (via Facebook link) & was thrilled to take the well-narrated morning tour of all the exhibits. A big 'thank you' to our cameraperson & my personal "Hi" to Jeanine (sp?) And to all of the Exhibitors who have supplied a plethora of information.

Good for you! He's one of our faithful board monitors & seems like a nice fellow from his posts. I don't belong to FACEBOOK, but was able to follow some of the Convention activities thru the link from this board & it looked like a time of fun & info for all! Can't wait to read the report in The Phoenix magazine.

Oh, cool! The exhibits are online? I want to check that! Any new products that caught your eye?

I'm guessing Coloplast was there with the new flip "flex" barrier which I'd like to get in a 2-piece version. Must wait 3 mos since I just ordered (too many) Convatec supplies. Was Cymed (Microskin) represented since I am not getting communication from them? Also interested in support of the abdomen with a band rather than a belt -- not uncomfortably tight -- with an outlet for the pouch if anything is new. I meant to order this months ago.

Hope you enjoyed and the conference was a success.

Diane,

The list of exhibitors had been posted online (about a month before Conference) in a UOAA blog post at https://www.ostomy.org/discover-a-world ... onference/

FYI, here's a diagram from the Conference program book showing the layout of the exhibit hall:

Image

Coloplast was there, of course, as one of the major manufacturers. Cymed is a much smaller company and wasn't at the Conference.

Remember that if you just want some product samples, you can easily obtain them from any of the major manufacturers by phoning them or visiting their website. (This is separate from the supplies you obtain normally from your supplier.) So, if you want samples of the new Coloplast product, which they call "Sensura Mio Convex Flip" in the US but call "Sensura Mio Concave" in other countries, you can easily obtain them. As noted by many other posts on this board Cymed has been having difficulty providing samples.

Note: be careful about that "flex" term. ConvaTec's product lines include a "flex convex" model. But among Coloplast products, the term "flex" refers only to the type of coupling between the pouch and flange of a 2-piece (adhesive coupling as opposed to the more standard tupperware-like coupling which they call a "click" coupling). And I believe that the product you're interested in (Convex Flip) doesn't even come with their adhesive coupling "flex" coupling — so its 2-piece version comes with only the "click" coupling.

Thanks, Bob. Yes, I knew about the list of exhibitors and maybe I misunderstood? I thought someone indicated a VIDEO existed of what was shown at the exhibits. That would be hard to produce. I just looked quickly but didn't see it.

Also, thanks for the correct name of Sensura Mio Convex Flip. I did get a sample and when I had my post-surgical wound, the visiting nurse ordered me one box -- but she ordered the 1-piece when I wanted to try the 2-piece. I will call Coloplast back... or wait 3 months. It's such an amazing product when it comes to the wafer and how it adheres to the abdomen with crevices and bulges after many surgeries. (So beautiful... ha!)

Many thanks and hope this is clearer.

Hello Diane & Bob: I should have clarified my mention of the video tour as an overview of the hall exhibits via the Facebook link. Bob's diagram shows just how many individual vendors were involved. Pretty impressive!
Diane, you raise an important point for all of us who were unable to attend the event. The latest edition of The Phoenix arrived here yesterday & it includes an amazing article entitled "Virtual" Help for Ostomates regarding Educating and connecting ostomates using videoconferencing. What possibilities for outreach that can present! With another Convention planned for 2021, perhaps the exhibitors could keep that in mind & develop something along a similar venue.
I love The Phoenix & its predecessor, The Ostomy Quarterly (Am I ever dating myself!). My mainstays through all sorts of personal crises. I feel compelled to post a review of this Fall 2019 edition which is the most comprehensive yet.

Hi To Dream and Bob,

There IS a video of the exhibit hall on Facebook. I am on FB and for me, the link is at https://www.facebook.com/UOAAinc/videos ... 319370967/. However, it's fairly cursory and gives a broad overview of which exhibitors are present. Great that there were so many. I definitely wish I'd visited Safe n Simple. Also saw Marlen whose products I've not seen for years -- and Trio about which I know nothing. Well, that's why folks attend!

However, perhaps the organization could offer a livestream or more specific info showing some details about new products next time-- even if there's a fee involved.

I do see that some panel discussions and events are offered on Facebook. So technology and the annual ostomy conference are coming along!
