barrier ring / wafer

I am 7 weeks post op and having some issues with my ostomy appliance. My barrier ring at times seems to be elevating around the stoma and sticking up through the wafer. I am currently using 2 piece system from Hollister. It doesn't cause leakage but I am concerned.

Barrier rings, by function, are very pliable. When you had body heat to them, they become even more pliable. With that pliability, they form well around the areas that they are attached to... So, if you have some barrier ring coming up around the stoma, and you aren't having any leakage, then you are in good shape. No worries. Next application, you might want to use less barrier ring (because you don't have to use the whole ring...I only use a third of each ring with each change), or you might consider moving it a little further from the stoma. No leakage=No problems!

Hello all.
I use a precut wafer. Two peice appliance.
Convetec.
I also use an Adapt slim ring.
When I get everything in place I sit in a recliner with a heating pad get a good stick and it works well.
I get seven days out of it. Wonderful.
I make sure the ring is snug around the base of the stoma and put the wafer on.
I also use a qtip stick with the cotton cut off to push things down to my skin.
I was in the hospital two weeks ago and had to change. I didn't have a heating pad and had to change 3 times in two days. Wow.
As soon as I got home I changed and used the heating pad and that made the difference.. It lasted a week.

Have you tried using just the wafer, no ring? Sometimes, less is more.

I agree with that 100 percent.
Failure comes with having too many things line up.
Over time I had to start using a barrier ring as my stoma changed and I had (have) pecut wafers. Hundreds of them. So I had to come up with a solution. It was a ring. And that took awhile for me to perfect. It all takes time.
At first I just put a precut wafer and went on. Now my stoma has changed slightly and a ring works well.
But yes.
Less is best.
