Filters/Stickers... how they Work, or Don't Work?

Post by [WilmaWonka] »

I undersrand that stickers work hand-in-hand with the filter to control odor elimination, reduction of air in the pouch, and the prevention of water infiltration. I also understand that the filter can create other undesireable issues as well. If a filter can still get plugged, and can still allow odor to escape, why wouldn't you just forgo the filter and burp the bag? If you used a deoderizing lubricant, wouldn't that be an alternative to the possible pancaking that occurs (more so) for those who have had colostomy surgery?

Not there quite yet, but the surgery is pending. Not sure if the filtered pouch would be more expensive, but if its performance is lacking why would I want to go this route? I realize everyone is different and products perform differently, but would love to hear all your comments/suggestions Thanks, and WISH ME LUCK!

Hello Wilma & I shall definitely wish you well regarding impending surgery. I recently updated my post regarding ConvaTec's sample pouches I had tried. When I wore the filtered version, I did not use a sticker & had no real problem with overnight leakage despite having had very liquid output at the time. Beginner's luck? Perhaps. One thing I've learned over these many years, is that nothing is 'fail proof' when dealing with ostomy care & supplies. You might consider contacting one of the filtered pouch manufacturers directly for samples prior to ordering. Most have knowledgeable reps ready to offer support & assistance.

Is that what stickers are for? I've only used them when swimming!
There's usually a plastic lining behind the filter. Output would have to travel uphill to get to the filter--if you're standing. Lying down, I get a tiny bit of filter leak a couple of times a year. I irrigate, so have less output, but still get some loose stool at odd times.

Colostomy in 2002. Ileostomy in 2018 -- and still learning re filters and stickers! The lessons go on!

Now with an ileo, when lying down at night -- although I tried to sleep sort of upright with a wedge pillow, there's pancaking. I haven't found a solution to this. As an ileostomy, I no longer can irrigate. Yes, the filter gets wet and waste can leak out the filter. I've found that Convatec's round filter caps sometimes fall off. I don't put a sticker on it because I need the air to pass. Yes, I do burp the pouch.

I'll be back with more comments and questions. Sorry to be away so long. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
