Okay trying anti-bacterial toothpaste as bag odor control

Post by Shamrock4806 »

I've been experimenting with various things put in the bag or toilet for odor control but one suggestion I've found I haven't tried yet and that's toothpaste.

So far it seems to work great, instead of getting a noseful of stink when dumping its fresh and minty.

I've tried baking soda, dissolved antacid tablets and antibacterial dish soap. All have had their respective issues so I've discontinued using them.

The thing to ensure is to rinse the bag a couple of times first before squeezing a dollop of toothpaste inside.

So we will see how this holds up long term! 😁

Why not use ostomy supplied products? Well first they always don't work, have to be shipped in or cost a lot.

Here I can grab from any of the supermarket shelves any toothpaste I want, take advantage of sales or product discontuations.

It also seems the toothpaste has a carry over effect, it doesn't all wash out upon rinsing so I could use less the next go around.

Seems to be working great so I went shopping and bought four tubes.

Yes much better, no foul stench when opening the bag to dump. Usually just a minty smell.

Now using just regular toothpaste, not antibacterial, seems to work just the same.

Another trick I've heard of is using Tic-tacs. Small tiny mints that can double as a breath mint. Although sanitation could be an issue as ones hands are often dirty handling ones bag then the container. Same with toothpaste, so having some separation is required to avoid contamination. I keep my bag toothpaste next to the toilet and not with my regular toiletries. Wash my hands after every toilet use so they are clean.
