Koch pouch and hysterectomy

Post by Valerie Potter »

If you have a Koch pouch and had to have a hysterectomy after you had the pouch, I would like to hear from you. I've had a Koch pouch since 1984. I now need the hysterectomy and am afraid of ob/gyn surgeons who know nothing about the pouch. Any advice would be appreciated ! Thanks !

I have an Indiana pouch- for urine, it is very similar to the Kock pouch. I had a hysterectomy years after getting my pouch, in fact my pouch was about 10 years old when I had it done. I had the surgery done where I had my pouch made, my uro was on stand by- he was in the OR while I had my hysterectomy. That way if there was a problem he could step in, luckily it all went on with out any complications that I know of. I had it done vaginally and it was a total hysterectomy. They took the uterus as well as both ovaries and fallopian tubes. Please feel free to ask me any questions.Judith

I had no problems with my pouch :) . I was in the hospital for two days afterwards and then it was another 4 weeks before I went back to work. As with any surgery you do feel tired easily and it does awhile to feel totally back yourself. Of course you can contact me again! A great website to get help, answers, etc is www.hystersisters.com That site was big help to me when I was going through it. Glad I made you feel better! Judith

I had a full hysterectomy at the same time as my cystectomy, I found recovery from that to be worse than my bladder considering the necessary hormones etc. I am fine now, just regulated with my estrogen.

I am facing a hysterectomy..I'm 53 and post menopause. My kock pouch is 31 yrs old and my valve has moved but interbation is completely fine. My gyno will have a colorectal surgeon present to move the pouch if needed and urologist to sling the bladder.

What I don't know is that once the uterus and ovaries are out, will the pouch be able to move around thus possibly hendering interbation?

I am worried that if it moves even a bit, my valve may shift as well?

That's a great question for your surgeon. All I can tell you is that in my case cathing my pouch was no different after wards. When the uterus is removed I think ( this is just conjecture) the other organs left inside shift and fill in the empty spaces left behind. Good luck- are they doing it vaginally?

thanks...not sure if they can do laproscopic vaginal...may attempt and then if not doable, switch during surgery. I asked the kp surgeon and no one will know for sure....but glad to hear yours was no different! Did you have your bladder put into a sling so it won't drop?

I don't have my bladder and because of that I had prolapse so that is why I had the hysterectomy. I was told the same thing before surgery- they wanted to do it vaginally but if need be they were going to switch over. I was told if there were complications I could end up with a colostomy so I would have been a double ostomate, but thankfully everything went well.
