Rolfe Benirschke, long-time supporter of the UOAA, and known for his providing accurate information about ostomy surgery to the general public has embarked upon a new venture. Contributing a column for The Phoenix magazine that features people who have persevered while facing the obstacles, painful symptoms and difficult choices presented by catastrophic illness. Maria's story, highlighted in the current summer issue, is a vital upbeat account of the challenges that most of us have feared and ultimately addressed. This vibrant intelligent young woman successfully meets adversity with courage, humor and grace. Generously reaching out to help others by willingly sharing her own experiences.
Like Mr. Benirschke, I also realize the crucial importance of seasoned empathetic peer support. My own strength to carry on has been greatly influenced by knowing of real people who have succeeded and continue to succeed despite the many negative physical, emotional & social circumstances life presents. And I bless all those who have reached out to me without reservation. Understanding that fear lurked beneath my edgy ill temperament. Reassuring. Affirming. Praising my little victories and helping me to find intrinsic value hidden within defeats.
Then abruptly last winter, the tragic loss of a sensitive child driven to extremes. My own old toughened battle-scarred heart surprisingly deeply seared by the incident. Still able to feel. Resurrecting pain long buried. Guiltily half-forgotten. Marveling as I brushed at the tears. Responding the inevitable, "if only. . ."
Then, as I grieved and mourned the child. And perhaps, myself. I suddenly recalled two similar stories of children contending with major health issues from birth. Both harassed and tormented by the vicious ignorance of a world that callously and willfully misunderstands.
One young gentleman went on to ride rodeo bulls. His story was included in Mr. Benirschke's Great Comebacks from Ostomy Surgery. The last I read he was literally scaling mountains.
The other was able to channel his painful experiences into the focused discipline of the martial arts. He was featured in an article by Michael Franco, A True Fighter, in the Phoenix magazine (December/Winter 2013) that described the school he had gone on to found. And according to comments posted on Facebook (through the website link), he continues to have a positive influence despite ongoing life-threatening health concerns.
Thank you, Mr. Benirschke, for recognizing the worth of each individual. In helping them to give guidance, instill a sense of acceptance and cheer on in encouragement of those who still struggle today.
