Allergic reaction
I posted a form of this yest but I’m not sure what happened to it so I will try again lol. I have developed an allergy to my wafer that I have used over the last 6 years. I am very red, itchy and having mild weeping every where the adhesive touches. Bc of the weeping I have to picture frame with tape which I’m allergic to as well. My doc and I are at a loss as to what to do. I do have some new wafers coming. Trying ConvaTec. Anyone have any ideas?? TIA.

Re: Allergic reaction
Our physicians are so limited these days by imposed cost-effective constraints that they often cannot keep up with the latest information. I know how frustrating this can be.
Have you spoken with a WOC Nurse? They often have specialized information & experience with skin reactions. If there is none in your area, the major manufacturers (ConvaTec included) have nurses who are knowledgeable & available. Contact their websites for help.
Also, check out the UOAA website to find a support group near you who may know of competent ostomy nurses nearby.
I have used skin prep type products beneath the wafer (currently a Sensi Care sting free skin barrier protectorant individually packaged wipe) that I buy from The Parthenon Co. in Utah. They are an established family-owned firm that are always ready to help with questions. So far, I have seen an improvement in my own peri-stomal skin integrity.

Re: Allergic reaction
I live in a small rural community. No Ostomy associations or WOC. I will reach out to ConvaTec and see what they recommend. I also use sensicare but in the spray. Thanks for your reply!

Re: Allergic reaction
Have you looked into flanges (wafers) that have no tape? They are available from several manufacturers -- including Convatec. Maybe they could send you a sample.
Also, when I've had skin irritation under the tape of the wafer, I've cut most of the tape away. It does shorten the life of the wafer but it was a lot more comfortable.

Re: Allergic reaction
I also have adhesive allergies, but no problems with convatec durahesive.
I get irritation from barrier spray, too, so use only the wafer and occasionally nystatin powder.
Call manufacturers and ask for an advice nurse, they'll help you out and send free samples.
Here's contact info for some manufacturers:

Recently watched an excellent video with Elaine O'Rourke & Ostomy Nurse Anita Prinz about solving problems with leakage on the UOAA website under 'Latest' in their menu listing. Highly recommend watching this for any person with an ostomy. Many problems were addressed & offers of further help extended by these two health professionals. https://www.ostomy.org/ostomy-leaks-and-skin-breakdown/

Re: Allergic reaction
Going to see a wound nurse this afternoon. No Ostomy nurse where I live. It’s worse. Now I’m wondering if I’m allergic to the skin prep as I can’t wear it under my port dressing. If she can’t help I’ll be calling ConvaTec to speak with them. I’m so frustrated.

Re: Allergic reaction
I wanted to share my experience:
I had severe allergic reaction with my first surgery to: tape, wafers, paste etc and have been using stomahesive wafer with Karaya paste for over 30 years
and recently unable to maintain seal fro more than 8-12hours
You can imagine what skin integrity is with the leaks ....
Its just a difficult position when you can maintain a secure fit,
I was able to find a effective fit with a Duraadhesive Convex wafer and coloplast paste with barred ring but in the process of trying to get an effective fit
all the the skin surrounding stoma was blistered and weeping thus unable to secure a seal...
The situation for me:
Ever so gentle skin barrier with karaya powder then replied very so gently skin barrier, a small amount of hydrocortisone cream then again with the gentle application of skin barrier, then a small amount of paste around the stoma then the skin ring moulded to stoma then the wafer.
oral Benadryl and Ibuprofen and the pain and itching was unbearable.
I called my insurance DME provided and spend 3 hours coordinating with PCP to get the supplies needed, no one the PCP, DME understands the real time emergency crisis the estimate is in and that we depend on a secure fit wafer for our ability to function.
I wound up privately paying for wafer and bags via Amazon as their are no DME provided in my area at the the closest DME prouder 80 miles away does not carry my size. For me thats what I needed to do to assure I could mange my stoma and continue to remain functional, for me I it was the best to private pay to assure I had what I needed rather than worry
( I would suggest you reach out to ET for telephone assistance and trail any of the new supplies:
Barriers rings, barriers wipes or sprays, adhesive removes , adhesive release sprays, paste The ETI called was with Convatec and she immediately understood the severity and provided samples to determine best fit and provided the support and reassurance I needed to remain effective in caring for myself)
I would highly recommend you tube information - vegan and Lets talk IBD- both have ostomys and have first hand real time experience and step by step instructions with skin healing- crusting technique.
Hang in there , Good Luck with healing-
